Has anyone got any stories about finding good payable alluvial gold nowhere near well known areas or tracks? Places you had to hike a fair distance to get to? Todays roads and tracks all lead to well known prospect areas which do tend to rejuvenate but I often wonder how worthy it is it to tackle the wilderness on the hope of some old gold caught up in those hills and terraces. If so - how was it found? Old benches ..mullocks...crevices full of pay dirt?

I personally have not have any luck finding payable gold, but i have found gold in a few areas that it is not known for locally. Problem around here is so much ground is locked up with NP's, conservation areas and private property

That's a win finding gold in an area that's not a known Prospect. Can't say I've had ever experienced that. Too true there is not much of a playground left or Crown parcels. I often get asked if it's tempting to explore further but my reasoning is , if its going to be any worthy of investigation - then the old diggers had already carved in that first path..

I do remember reading an article on a similar vein (no pun intended) and the comment that the Barrington Tops NSW still held the possibility of new gold finds. However, this was on the basis that a lot of the area is quite inaccessible which is why it has never been prospected. A bit of a no win situation unfortunately.

I found a gold seam on the banks of the Goulburn river Victoria. It was only a few meters from a public road. Because of this I couldn't do any exploration. I did however retrieve some small nuggets from the river bed down stream of the Gold seam. Not far from Sailor Bills Creek Flying Scott

You know the old saying, gold is where you find it, not where others have. Experience has taught me to carry my pan; and anytime I am taking a break and a river, creek or wash is nearby, I have a casual pan. It seems that most streams can and do carry some gold (of sorts). I can guarantee the old timers never found all the places where gold may be. Most of the time they went to where a new strike had been discovered. Believe me there are places waiting to be discovered. It all depends on the pain you are willing to put yourself through to find them. They are out there waiting, if you are willing to suffer the consequence of the search.
