Hello Paul
I can think of a few general tips that may be of use: 1) Don't give up. If gold was easy to find then everyone would be doing it. Persistence counts. 2) Treat it as a hobby, like fishing. "Dirt fishing". 3) Do research! There are many excellent resources: The mineral/mines departments of each state have online maps and fossicking resources. Here in NSW there is DIGS, which is excellent. Old newspaper reports can be found on the Trove website. Various online discussion forums such as this have a wealth of information. 4) Mix it up between detector and alluvial methods. If you are in a gold area not known for nuggets, then you can still bring out the pan to play. 5) Don't forget other minerals, including gemstones.

I'm also new to metal detecting. I've always been fascinated with looking for buried treasures. I'm glad I found this forum. I've been reading old posts and I'm learning a lot.
