I have put the Barnard River (above the transfer scheme) on my list of places to visit and try a pan or two. Has anyone tried? and any success? on the Barnard.

I've not tried that river, but it's been on my "to do" list for a few years - actually, that entire gorgeous looking hilly area just North of the Barrington Tops has been on my list. Apart from being a scenic place to visit, there are some interesting fossicking reports of the river and its tributaries.
IIRC, some of the flow from the river is diverted into another river system (the Hunter) and as a result, some of the descriptions of the river in the old reports may be unfamiliar. Also, a lot of it is on private land, so access might be a problem.
New gold discoveries in that area were as recent as the late 1960s, perhaps because the area was of more use as a route between the Hunter and the New England goldfields rather than a place to investigate. Having said that though, there are probably no water courses in NSW, especially in the Great Divide, that have not yet been prospected to some degree.

I was familiar with the Barnard having crossed it many times travelling up through Gloucester to the New England and the back road to Nundle. I had read somewhere a report from years ago about gold being in the upper reaches of the Barnard. So onto Google maps and started where it joins the Manning and traced it back. I was very surprised when up came Barry Rd Hanging Rock. Had no idea I had been so close to the Barnard's headwaters. The Peel River is so close and it flows west. And of course there should be gold in that vicinity, just couldn't find many references by anyone.

The colonial geologist, Fr WB Clarke, surveyed the area over 150 years ago and reported that he stood at the watershed where less than three yards from each other were tributaries for the Peel River, which went West, and the Barnard, which eventually emptied in the Pacific.

Hope you get there pretty soon and have success Blocker. These days I think the less heard of areas have more potential as they aren't flogged like the well known spots. Rowdy
