Hi people I have been a prospector on and off - mainly off since 1972 when I was introduced to opal fossicking, been doing that since. So now it is time to branch out and try gold prospecting. I have an SD3500 and a GPX 4500. I live in port Stephens NSW and have since retired and I love trout fishing and NTH Australia fishing Cheers

Hi grumpy1, Welcome to the forum, once you find your first bit of gold your hooked for life. We'd like to hear of your exploits out in the field and even if you didn't make a fortune but only found a few specks please don't feel like you have nothing to contribute in showing us or telling about your adventure. When your out prospecting it's always a good way to unwind by throwing in a line and catching your tea for the evening. Are there any good prospecting spots up near Port Stephens or do you have to travel a bit to get to them. Rowdy

Back in the 1930s they panned and sluiced the beach sands for gold at Port Stephens - most of the work being done on the SE-facing beaches like Anna Bay, which, with the rocks there, is a natural beach-gold trap. Not something to try these days though, due to the National Park.

Hi Rowdy and cronicbadger, Prospecting spots are non existent in Port Stephens but there is a few gold known areas 1 to 3 hrs away, mainly reef mining, panning you only get flour dust or the odd speck ... most beach sand has gold but is too fine to warrant the mucking around and yes there are more regulations now Cheers Thanks for the welcome
