Hi Desperate Peoples' My name is Stuart .... smoky for short ... I've been prospecting for around 12 years now, but only recently have bought what I call a "real" detector, a minelab 4500, also have a highbanker (NSW Govt. bah humbug) and river sluice as well as all the necessary pans and such. Been to QLD gold fields: Warwick and Clermont, NSW Hill End. On the cards: NSW Coffs Harbour gold fields with a mate of mine who lives there, Victorian Gold fields this April 2020 for 10 days and when finally retired in 2-3 years time, WA for 4 months serious gold prospecting. Would love to get into any group who does this as a hobby around the Mid North Coast of NSW, I live in the Wauchope/Port Macquarie area, so if any group wants a skinny old guy for a member of their group, let me know please, will travel to meetings if held on weekends as far as Gosford south and Coffs Harbour north and Uralla West. No use for any out east as I can't use wetsuits and oxygen gear.

Hi Stuart
You're certainly well located to access a variety of the northern NSW gold and gem areas. I'm from the lower Hunter Valley where black gold (coal) reigns supreme, so have to travel to places like Nundle and Uralla to feed my habit. It might be worth investigating the coastal area around Port Macquarie as there are some interesting historical deposits.

I also love spending 2 weeks every year in Hill End, but alas, not this year, as I'm having both my knees replaced and spending the Christmas/New Year recuperating. In the meantime, I'm going to the Victorian Gold Fields this NSW April School Holidays for 10 days, 5 before the holidays and first week of the holidays. I'll be taking my highbanker, river sluices and panning gear plus my Minelab 4500 with me for some serious prospecting. Just bought myself a new sluice this week, and the dream matting has some oily stuff on it, not sure of how to remove it without damaging it, and wondering if anyone knows how I should rid the sluice of that oily substance, don't suppose you have any knowledge of that type of problem would you?

Hi Smoky and welcome to the site mate. Sorry I can't help you on any clubs up your way as I live in Victoria. I'm lucky as I'm surrounded with goldfields, as they are literally on my doorstep. I do agree the 4500 is an excellent machine. I personally run a 5000. Anyway mate have a look around on the site as there is plenty of things here to wet your appetite. Cheers nugget893
