Stinkypete you finally got it mate BP is correct. BP (British Petroleom was founded by William Knox D'Arcy in 1908 In 1882 he and a few of his mates started a syndicate and opened up a mine on Iron Mountain Qld later named Mount Morgan. William D'Arcy was director and the largest share holder. He held 125,000 shares in his own name and 233,000 in trust. At one stage the shares reached £17/1s/- each, making them worth more than £6 million (an amount equivalent to £583 million in present day terms. (those figure are in Pounds not Dollars) In 1889, with a substantial fortune, he and his family moved to England. In 1900 he agreed to fund a search for oil and minerals in Persia. Drilling in southern Persia at Shardin continued until 1907 when the search was switched to Masjed Soleyman (Masjid-I-Sulaiman in Persian in a place named "Maidan-i-Naftun". Drilling began at one site in January 1908 and at another nearby in March. By April with no success the venture was close to collapse and D'Arcy almost bankrupt, but on May 16 there were encouraging signs and on May 26 at 1,180 feet (360 m) they struck oil. And BP was formed. If you want to know more just Google "William Knox D'Arcy" (11 October 1849 – 1 May 1917) OK Stinkpete it is now your turn to ask a question on Australian History. nugget893

Official 1851. But if you want to get technical gold was first discovered in NSW in 1823 Gold was first officially discovered in Australia on 15 February 1823, by assistant surveyor James McBrien, at Fish River, between Rydal and Bathurst (in New South Wales). But it was also reported that a convict found gold while he was working on a road that was getting pushed through to Bathhurst in 1798. He was flogged for his troubles. And in Victoria it was first discovered at Daisy Hill in 1849 by a shepherd named Chapman.:-
Prior to this discovery, Daisy Hill had gained a particular notoriety, due to a gold rush in February 1849, that was based upon the claims made by one Thomas Chapman, a shepherd and former Parkhurst prison exile. Chapman sold a gold nugget to a Melbourne Jeweller, Mr. Brentani of Collins Street. Soon afterwards Chapman left the Port Phillip District for Sydney, although he returned again many years later
