Bega if you are referring to a convict named Barclays, "No" The convict that I was referring to was named "Daley" and it was in August 1788 when he produced a lump of gold-bearing earth which he said he'd found gold in the bush by the harbour in Botany Bay NSW. Daley was made to admit that he'd filed down a Brass Buckle and a Gold Guinea to manufacture his specimen. The first man to have found gold in Australia was rewarded with 300 lashes for his trouble. When the first road over the Blue Mountain to Bathurst, the convict road gangs found bits of gold turned up by their picks. They learned to keep quiet about it. It was better than being accused of stealing it and getting flogged. (an extract from the book "Bill Peach's GOLD") I remember reading some were that Daley kept on about finding the gold to such an extent that Daley later got "Hung" on some other up jumped charges just to shut him up. The authority's and the Colonial Government at the time did not want a convict roit on their hands if it was true about gold being found in the area. nugget893

I think it may be my turn again as I got the last question right.
This one may be a bit harder:-
Can anyone tell me "What is the "FIRST" recognised battle that Australia was involved in".
