I'd run with Skips idea. A set of wiper blades and a horn. Comply with some Australian Design Rules and i'm sure we can get it registered !!!!! That way you can drive it to the creek..... All jokes aside. Its looking awsum. Good job mate

hi all been an interesting read here thanks for that, quick question if i may....do you guys use the hog mats because of where you's do your sluicing being fine gold or is it good to use the hog mats every where? the reason i ask is i just got a purchased highbanker to replace my homemade one and the new one has carpet (miners moss..i think) and i was going to put that spaghetti looking mat in it and the black ribbed stuff under the spaghetti mat as where i used to do a bit of panning/sluicing has course gold and fine stuff but mostly 0.05 to a couple of grams. so should i whack in a bit of hog mat or stick to the spaghetti stuff. my sluicing experience is self taught and from books/Internet so i got no idea really as I've been detecting mainly instead of sluicing so i hope this question don't sound too silly for you lot cheers fencejumper

I had watched the videos of the gold hog mat and liked the idea behind them but was hesitant to fork out that much money. Once seeing hereskip running them i was sold. Running the mats alone seems to save alot on setup and cleanout as all i do is slide mats in and out, no bolts, clips or washers to deal with. They seem to work with fine gold well but also hold the more chunky gold at Tuena. Hereskip did a test with a large piece he found there dropped it in the top hopper 2 times once made it about 1/2 way down the sluice the other it stayed lodged right below the hopper and from memory needed a knife to pry it out. I also think the hog mat can handle a bit more material running through it than miners moss as you have the active exchange in the hog mat where as the miners moss will clog and fill. This is just my personal opinion after using the 2, iam quiet happy with the gold hog mat but i dont have a lot of experience either

Yes Agree with Shivan, lots and lots of hours watching videos and different types of riffle systems and (flat bar, angle iron, compound, ect… also have experienced firsthand gold hog matting in Skips HB and liked it. Regardless of what type of riffles, screening and matting you use in any particular box there are six basic factors that need to be considered for optimal sluice/HB operation:
Classification Wetting or Washing Material Introduction Stratification Water Flow/Velocity/Slope Cleaning

G'day fencejumper. I think your biggest hurdle will be determining how frequent your goen to shovel up small nugs in the couplu + gram range "What a terrible situation to be confronted with" ;D If the small nugs abound, you'l only be classifying to a min of 13mm! From what I've seen and experienced, riffles need to be at least equal to the size of classified material, which posses new problems to make the riffle work correctly??
My view only.
Cheers Chris.

Cheers Chris. hi ya mate the nuggy's around the 2 gram and over aren't that thick there but do come up..the most common size is match head size.. there's probably heaps of fine stuff but my homemade gear and lack of knowledge back then most likely lost it and i just got the easy stuff.. what i was trying to work out is if you guys use different mats for fine gold areas and course gold areas??? mainly cause i did not want to fork out heaps for hog mats and then find out it's best used for fine gold. as for classifying, i sometimes used my trommel to get rid of the bigger rocks, but if i didn't take that i just shoveled straight into the straight in to the highbanker but put a 3 metre river sluice i convert, after that for extra catching area. l'm pretty sure you more experienced washer guys would laugh if you seen me back then ;D cheers

Forgot to say did meet up with Mark and his dog, upstream,, did some sampling but for convenience parked and set up at the cricket ground. My commentary is little shite so excuse the mumbling.

One thing I would suggest to make life a lot easier would be to get rid if the rigid yellow hose and get layflat hose . It is much lighter , rolls up so takes up less room and is a lot easier to lay out and use . Have a few different lengths that can be joined if required but can just use a short length if close to the water supply .Just a suggestion . Ron
